Este artigo trata do processo de construção do Teatro Amazonas, em Manaus, destacando a participação de Crispim do Amaral na sua concepção. A investigação começa pela descrição de espaços teatrais preexistentes em Manaus, estabelecendo o contexto histórico para a construção de um teatro público, observando os obstáculos iniciais, interrupção das obras e sua retomada durante o governo de Eduardo Ribeiro. Em seguida, ao mencionar a trajetória de Crispim do Amaral, como cenógrafo e pintor, mostramos sua participação na decoração do Teatro Amazonas. Abordamos o projeto da fachada, explorando a influência de elementos do classicismo e do revivalismo, a partir das fontes primárias disponíveis. Procuramos discutir sobre a estética eclética do Teatro Amazonas, que experimenta a combinação de referências estilísticas históricas com a utilização de materiais inovadores, como a estrutura metálica da cúpula, e ainda sobre a controvérsia envolvendo autoria e recepção. Consideramos que a cúpula, idealizada por Bancels, possivelmente com a participação de Amaral, se tornou o elemento icônico do Teatro Amazonas, consolidando sua imagem como símbolo da cultura daquele período. A pesquisa fundamentou-se na análise de documentos históricos, como projetos, ofícios, fotografias e periódicos, tendo como orientação teórica os estudos de Valladares, Muthesius, Ricci, Panofsky e Warburg, entre outros.||This article discusses the construction process of the Teatro Amazonas in Manaus, highlighting the participation of Crispim do Amaral in its design. The investigation begins with a description of pre-existing theatrical spaces in Manaus, establishing the historical context for the construction of a public theater, noting the initial obstacles, interruption of the works, and their resumption during the government of Eduardo Ribeiro. Next, it delves into the career of Crispim do Amaral as a set designer and painter, and his role in decorating the Teatro Amazonas. We address the facade design, exploring the influence of classical and revivalist elements based on available primary sources. We aim to discuss the eclectic aesthetic of the Teatro Amazonas, which combines historical stylistic references with the use of innovative materials, such as the metallic structure of the dome, as well as the controversy surrounding its authorship and reception. We consider that the dome, designed by Bancels and possibly with the involvement of Amaral, became the iconic element of the Teatro Amazonas, consolidating its image as a symbol of the culture of that period. The research was based on the analysis of historical documents, such as blueprints, official letters, photographs, and newspapers, following the theoretical guidance of Valladares, Muthesius, Ricci), Panofsky, and Warburg (2015), among others.
