Sendo assim, busca-se o inalcançável do arquivo e da imagem fotográfica, como ultrapassamento do interdito e a obscenidade da morte diante do horror da guerra.||This text analyzes the use of animated imagery in two films: "The Missing Picture," directed by Cambodian director Rithy Panh, and "Waltz with Bashir," by Israeli director Ari Folman. Both works stand out not only for how they articulate their narratives, but also for their approach to the traumas experienced by the filmmakers as testimonies to the horrors of war. Issues related to documentary aspects and the boundaries between fiction seem insuficient to interpret these films. The idea, then, is to examine these works in the light of the essay-film and understand how animation emerges as a potent dispositives to deal with an absence, a gap, that archival material and photographic records alone cannot fully encompass. Animation, fueled by traces of imagination and, above all, by its powerful regimes of fabulation, emerges as a mediator of memories, exploring the potentialities of cinematic expression beyond issues of visual realism. Therefore, the unattainable of the archive and photographic image is sought as a surpassing of the interdict and the obscenity of death in the face of the horror of war.
