This work analyzes the notion of language in three currents of linguistic thought, namely, Sociolinguistic, Materialist Discourse Analysis and Dialogical Discourse Analysis. Thus, it aims, in general, to verify how these theories conceive the notion of language. For this, the study follows the methodology of descriptive qualitative research, because it seeks to characterize the understanding about the concept, through the review of founding key works, in the three different theoretical perspectives, proposing, as needed, a dialogue with the Saussurian section in the study of language as well as with the theories developed in other fields of the humanities. At the end, it was found that sociolinguistics, casting its gaze on the heterogeneity of the system, understands language as the place of change (which always presupposes variation). In turn, the Materialist Discourse Analysis posits language as a borderline object, given in the balance between the real of language and the real of history. Finally, the Dialogic Discourse Analysis understands that language has effective existence in the quality of sign, where dialogies relations come from.||Este trabalho analisa a noção de língua em três correntes do pensamento linguístico, a saber, Sociolinguística, Análise Materialista do Discurso e Análise Dialógica do Discurso. Assim, objetiva, de maneira geral, verificar como essas teorias concebem a noção de língua. Para isso, o estudo segue a metodologia de pesquisa qualitativa descritiva, pois busca caracterizar a compreensão sobre o conceito, mediante a revisão de obras-chaves fundadoras, nas três diferentes perspectivas teóricas, propondo, conforme a necessidade, um diálogo tanto com o corte saussuriano no estudo da língua quanto com as teorias desenvolvidas em outros campos das ciências humanas. Ao final, constatou-se que a Sociolinguística, lançando o seu olhar sobre a heterogeneidade do sistema, compreende a língua como o lugar da mudança (a qual pressupõe sempre a variação). Por sua vez, a Análise Materialista do Discurso postula a língua como um objeto limítrofe, dado no balanço entre o real da língua e o real da história. Finalmente, a Análise Dialógica do Discurso entende que a língua tem efetiva existência na qualidade de signo, donde advêm as relações dialógicas.
