Our intention is to conduct a critical reading of the short story “George” by the Portuguese writer Maria Judite de Carvalho. A prominent figure in 20th-century Portuguese literature, the author depicts the solitude of the contemporary woman. This perspective is evident in the short story “George” from the collection Seta Despedida, published in 1995. Here we find a narrator witnessing George’s return to her homeland, where she reconnects with and also bids farewell to a part of her life, in a blend of memory, imagination, and reality. With a gaze that transcends time, George manages to piece together parts of a puzzle. Throughout the plot, the story reveals the family and social pressures that restrict George’s freedom of choice, demonstrating the influence of her social environment on her journey and the attempts to limit her autonomy. The character frees herself by selling the inherited house, opening up new possibilities. In this sense, George’s need to return and leave, to meet Gi, the eighteen-year-old, and Giorgina, the woman of about seventy, is essential for her to finally return and, at last, leave resigned.||Nossa intenção é realizar uma leitura crítica do conto “George”, da escritora portuguesa Maria Judite de Carvalho. Expoente da literatura portuguesa do século XX, a autora retrata a solidão da mulher contemporânea. Essa perspectiva é evidenciada no conto “George”, da coletânea Seta Despedida, de 1995. Aqui encontramos um narrador testemunhando o retorno de George à sua terra natal, onde ela se reencontra e também se despede de uma parte de sua vida, em uma mistura de memória, imaginação e realidade. Com um olhar que atravessa o tempo, George consegue juntar algumas peças de um quebra-cabeça. Ao longo da trama, o conto revela as pressões familiares e sociais que restringem a liberdade de escolha de George, demonstrando a influência do meio social em sua trajetória e a tentativa de limitação de sua autonomia. É através da venda da casa herdada que a personagem se liberta, abrindo espaço para novas possibilidades. Nesse sentido, a necessidade de George de retornar e partir, de encontrar Gi, a jovem de dezoito anos, e Giorgina, a mulher de cerca de setenta anos, é fundamental para que ela possa finalmente voltar e, por fim, partir resignada.
