The main subject of the first dialogue of Cicero’s De finibus, wich corresponds to books I e II of the treatise, is Epicurus’ moral thought. The opening passage of the dialogue contains a preliminary critique of Epicurus’ philosophy, which, undertaken by the character Cicero, gives rise to the treatment of the sententia de uoluptate. Provoked by the preliminary criticism, Torquato expounds Epicurus’s theory of pleasure in the first book, which is later refuted by Cicero in the second. We present here a Portuguese translation of this preliminary critique (Fin. I, 17-26). The translation is accopanied by a brief introduction and explanatory notes.||O primeiro diálogo do De finibus, que corresponde aos livros I e II do tratado, tem como objeto principal o pensamento moral de Epicuro. A passagem inicial do diálogo contém uma crítica preliminar a toda a filosofia de Epicuro, a qual, empreenida pela personagem Cícero, dá ensejo ao tratamento da sententia de uoluptate. Provocado pela crítica preliminar, Torquato expõe a teoria do prazer de Epicuro no primeiro livro. Seu discurso é depois refutado por Cícero no segundo livro. Apresentamos aqui uma tradução em português da crítica preliminar (Fin. I, 17-26), que vem acompanhada de uma breve introdução e de notas explicativas.
