This article’s objective is to examine the evolution of the concept of New Sincerity in the literary criticism that studies the works of the American author David Foster Wallace. It is a concept that, since its introduction in the literary context in 2010 by Adam Kelly, was more and more linked to Wallace, to the point that the author’s fiction became synonymous with New Sincerity and of a refusal of irony as a communicative, literary and rhetorical resource. This approach, however, has resulted in the stagnation of the discourse that was formed around the ideas of irony and sincerity in Wallace’s fiction, creating the necessity of a revaluation of what New Sincerity represents. In recent years, more and more studies have used the New Sincerity as a closed case, a fact that does not need to be questioned, that simply belongs to the author and his fiction. With this in mind, this paper offers a brief historical overview, tracing the concept's origins in the field of music and its eventual adoption by other disciplines. It then examines how the concept was applied in Wallace's works, explores the resulting implications, and considers what the future might hold for Wallacean studies.||O objetivo deste artigo é fazer um exame da evolução do conceito de Nova Sinceridade dentro da crítica literária que contempla a obra do autor norte-americano David Foster Wallace. Trata-se de um conceito que, desde sua introdução no contexto literário em 2010 por Adam Kelly, passou a ser cada vez mais atrelado a Wallace, ao ponto de a ficção do autor ter se tornado sinônima de Nova Sinceridade e de uma recusa da ironia enquanto recurso comunicativo, literário e retórico. Esta aproximação, entretanto, vem resultando na estagnação do discurso que se formou ao redor das ideias de ironia e de sinceridade na ficção de Wallace, tornando necessário algum tipo de reavaliação daquilo que a Nova Sinceridade representa. Nos últimos anos, cada vez mais estudos empregam a Nova Sinceridade como um caso já encerrado, um fato que não precisa de questionamento, que simples pertence ao autor e a sua ficção. Por conta disso, realizaremos um breve apanhado histórico, verificando como surge o conceito na área da música e como ele é, eventualmente, incorporado por outras áreas do conhecimento, para então verificar como ele foi aplicado na obra de Wallace e, por último, quais foram os desdobramentos disso e o que podemos esperar do futuro dos estudos wallaceana.
